Currently National Board certification is only available for Spanish and French teachers. This creates an equity issue, as some states/school districts offer pay increases and stipends for gaining certification. It also creates inequity when it comes to student loans opportunities for many languages teachers. The National Board website does not mention that certification is not available for educators of languages other than Spanish or French.
For more details, review the Report on National Board Certification, based on a survey of world language teachers by Dr. Veronica Trapani of OSPI. When asked: Why are you interested in attaining National Board certification?, over 50% of teachers in the survey said it was for professional or personal growth.
