World Language Educator Resources

1. Title VI Language Resource Centers 

a. LRCs (Language Resource Centers): LRCs create language learning and teaching materials, offer professional development opportunities for language instructors, and conduct and disseminate research on foreign language learning.

b. NEALRC (National East Asian): NEALRC focuses on searching for improved programs, materials, and study tools leading to advanced-level skills in East Asian languages by: 1) engaging with organizations to develop extended sequences of language courses, especially in the K-12 field; 2) providing assessments for programs and individuals; 3) producing research and materials that facilitate reaching advanced levels through improved teaching and learning resources; and 4) creating and maintaining tools for learners and teachers of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.

c. CARLA (The Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition): At the University of Minnesota supports language teachers with summer institutes, conferences, and a wide variety of research-based instructional and professional development materials on its extensive website.

d. CILC (The Center for Integrated Language Communities): Conducts research, develops materials, and offers professional development activities with a focus on language education in the community college context, heritage language learners, and the use of digital tools to foster the development of proficiency and intercultural competence.

2. TELL: The foundational centerpiece of the TELL Project is the Teacher Effectiveness for Language Learning Framework, which establishes those characteristics and behaviors that model teachers exhibit. The Framework consists of 7 domains designed to address a teacher’s need to Prepare for Student Learning, Advance Student Learning, and Support Student Learning.=

3. IALLT: The International Association for Language Learning Technology (IALLT) is a professional organization that provides leadership in the integration of instructional technology into the foreign language classroom.

Student Resources

1. Seattle One World Now: OneWorld Now!’s integrated program model includes language, leadership and study abroad, with a commitment to making these transformational opportunities accessible to all youth. Whereas many programs nationwide offer aspects of the OWN model, OneWorld Now!’s is one of the only programs in the nation with this holistic approach towards international education. OneWorld Now! works with youth from every high school in the Seattle Public School District. Participants apply for the program at the start of the school year and commit to our academic-year Global Leadership Program.

Study abroad and grants

1. Yes Abroad: The Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Abroad program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, is offering American high school students and recent graduates full scholarships to study for one academic year in countries with significant Muslim populations.

2. NSLI-Y: The National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) program was launched in 2006 to promote critical language learning among American youth. The U.S. Department of State, in cooperation with American Councils for International Education, awards and administers merit-based scholarships to high school students for participation in summer and academic year immersion programs.

3. Bureau of Education and Cultural Affaires Youth Ambassadors Program: The Youth Ambassadors Program brings together high school students and adult mentors from countries across the Americas to promote mutual understanding, increase leadership skills, and prepare youth to make a difference in their communities. Exchanges are primarily from Latin America and the Caribbean to the United States, but also include delegations from the United States to select countries.
