About Us

Founded in 1964, the Washington Association for Language Teaching (WAFLT) serves a membership of 400 to 600 elementary through university level language teachers. WAFLT seeks to meet the needs of a profession dedicated to the teaching of world language skills and cultural awareness by providing information and sensitive global perspectives in an era of ever-increasing internationalization.

Mission Statement

The updated mission (2026) of the Washington Association for Language Teaching is: 

  1. To advance the teaching and learning of world language skills and cultural competence at all levels of instruction and in all educative/institutional settings.
  2. To provide opportunities for all teachers of world languages to grow, connect, and innovate professionally.
  3. To recognize the contributions of outstanding members of the profession and the community.
